International Awards Spotlight the New and Cool

Without a doubt, property awards are superficial and meaningless, in many cases testimony to the quality of a project’s marketing apparatus more than its innovative design. And there are so many awards it’s hard to differentiate those that represent real achievement.
That said, awards programs also are a way to recognize the new and cool, developments that are pushing the envelope and trying hard to differentiate themselves from the pack. If nothing else, they raise awareness of projects around the world, giving everyone a chance to peek at the competition. Not to mention it's fun to look at the pictures.
Two international awards programs named winners in recent days, making November something akin to Oscar season for the industry.
In the realm of awards show, the International Property Awards, billed as the “industry’s most prestigious property awards programme,” is gaining in stature, with widespread participation from around the world. In a fairly convoluted process, winners are chosen for various countries and regions, in 36 different categories, from design to Web sites, ultimately leading to international winners, which were announced in San Diego, Nov. 11.

Meanwhile, MIPIM Asia announced it own roster of trophy-worthy projects for the Asia-Pacific region last weekend. The winners’ list was dominated by China and Singapore, where there is a clear interest in grand designs that make a statement.
